Announcing Our First Annual Songwriters’ Competition 

We are proud to announce the inaugural Grande Prairie Boys’ Choir Songwriters’ Competition, a platform celebrating songwriting talent from across the Peace Region. 

The GP Boys’ Choir has experienced incredible support from our community, and we want to contribute and celebrate the amazing music being created here. 

We invite ANY Songwriter with an original composition to apply for a chance to win $1,500 and have your work arranged for and performed by our choir. 

This competition is open to everyone—affiliation with the choir is not required, there is NO style limitation or preference. We are looking to celebrate all the music of our amazing home!

Competition Rules and Instructions:

Eligibility: Our only requirement is that the composer lives for has lived in the Peace Region of Alberta or South Peace Region of BC. 

Submission Details:

One Entry Per Applicant: Submit only one original song. The song does not need to have been written exclusively for this competition. If you have a great song that you have been performing for years you can submit it!

Song Length and Style: Songs of any theme or style are welcome. We want to champion the music that is written in our community. The winning song will be arranged for one of the following groups: 

  • Prep Choir – grade 2 
  • Junior choir – grade 3/4 
  • Senior Choir – grade 5/6/7
  • Young men’s choir – grade 8/9
  • Highschool men’s choir 10/11/12
  • Men’s choir

Therefore a children’s song, a country song, a teenage pop song, and a folk style song are all equally eligible. The winning selection will be the song that the jury of music industry professionals selects to be the best.

Submission Format: Entries must include a link to recording of the song (YouTube link preferred), and lyrics in a text document.

Judging and Selection:

  • Preliminary Round: Submissions are due by November 15, 2024.
  • Final Round: Finalists will perform live at the Grant Berg Gallery on January 18, 2025.

Prizes:

  • First Prize: $1,500 and the opportunity to have your song arranged for and performed by the choir.
  • Arrangement: Winning entries will be arranged by Trent Worthington, our Composer in Residence.

Intellectual Property:

  • Composer’s Rights: Composers retain all rights to their original songs.
  • Choir’s Rights: The choir obtains performance rights for the winning composition and will recognize the composer at each performance.
